BLM and Forest Service work to suppress East Rim Fire northeast of Dove Creek
DOLORES, Colo. – Today, firefighters with the Southwest Colorado Fire and Aviation Management Unit with the assistance of a Type III Incident Command Team are working to suppress the 250 acre East Rim Fire, which is burning near a steep canyon on Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service lands northeast of Dove Creek, Colorado.
The fire is burning near the Dolores River Canyon in Ponderosa Pine and Gambel Oak south of the Dolores River Pyramid, West of Forest Service Road 504.T and 220, north of Mountain Sheep Point and east of the Dolores River. Currently, these roads are open at this time, but anyone planning on traveling in the area is advised to be prepared for possible closures.
The Southwest Colorado Fire and Aviation Management team is working in coordination with adjacent private landowners, the U.S. Forest Service and the San Juan Fire Management to contain the fire. This fire is being suppressed to ensure firefighter safety while protecting cultural resources and power lines in the area. Due to the rugged terrain and lack of containment, smoke may be visible for several days.
Fire restrictions within the BLM Tres Rios Field Office were implemented on Tuesday, June 27. For information on wildfires and restrictions in the area, call the Southwest Colorado Fire and Aviation Management Information line (970.240.1070), visit the Durango Interagency Dispatch website (http://gacc.nifc.gov/rmcc/dispatch_centers/r2drc), or follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/SWD_Fire) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/BLMMontroseFireUnit).
